Ernie Hawkins
Fingerstylist Ernie Hawkins is one of
the great joys of guitar,” wrote
Vintage Guitar Magazine. Hawkins, a
master of American fingerpicking guitar,
revives an almost lost art. He was a
student of Rev. Gary Davis, the genius of
Piedmont gospel-blues-ragtime guitar.
He has worked closely with such
southern blues greats as Mance
Libscomb, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Fred
McDowell. Ernie’s soulful and dynamic
performances bring this music back to
life. Playing and teaching throughout
the world, Ernie has become one of the
best, and last, living legacies to this rich
musical tradition.
The music of Rev. Gary Davis, Hawkins’
teacher, forms the backbone of his
repertoire, which also includes classic jazz standards. Ernie performs solo and with up to a 5-piece band. Residency activities include
workshops, and visits to schools,
churches, prisons and nursing homes
where his colorful storytelling and
performances celebrate the tradition
of country blues.
